1890
January 7th: Charles Lister HIGGENBOTHAM (63)
Warwick
A former employee of Birmingham Corporation, convicted of the murder of his landlady, Winifred Whittaker Phillips (76), whom he killed by cutting her throat with a carving knife. He had no friends and no one took any notice of his fate after conviction. He was hanged by Berry, who gave him a drop of four feet six inches, but the force of the drop re-opened an old neck wound and blood gushed all over the walls of the pit. Death was seen to be instantaneous but the blood continued to spurt for several minutes.
